Responsible Investment Benchmark Report New Zealand 2020

The annual Responsible Investment Benchmark Report measures the size and growth of the New Zealand responsible and impact investment market over 12 months to 31 December 2019.


Highlights include:

  • The impact investing market was worth $4.74b in 2019, growing over 13 times from $358m in 2018. Green, social and sustainability bonds made up 88% of total worth.

  • The responsible investment market was worth $153.5b representing 52% of estimated $296.3b of total managed assets.

  • The top three drivers for growth in responsible investment are: alignment of investments with mission or values (44%); demand from retail investors (38%); expectation that responsible investments will outperform or better mitigate risks in the long-term.

  • The top three themes for investment managers applying sustainability-themed investments are: social impact (17%); climate change (13%); energy efficiency (12%).
